Butterfly Fine Motor Ideas

Tactile Caterpillar

Have each child select a craft material and glue it onto a large tag board circle.
Mount the circles on a wall at children's level to create a caterpillar's body.
Add construction paper feet and a head; then invite the children to touch the caterpillar.

Caterpillar Models

Provide clay or play dough.  Invite the children to create caterpillars.

Butterfly Hunt

Make butterfly nets using cardboard and citrus fruit bags.
Make butterflies from rectangle of tissue paper twisted in the center.
Throw them into the air and catch them with your net.

Butterfly and Caterpillar Lace-Up

Make construction paper butterflies and caterpillars.
Laminate for sturdiness. Punch holes along the outside edge.
Invite the children to lace yarn through the holes.

Butterfly Sensory Tub

Gather your materials. You will need some bowtie ( butterfly) pasta, food coloring,
vinegar, ziploc bags, cookie sheets, a medium sized plastic tub, scoops, and play
tongs.  Start by putting a few drops of your favorite food coloring into a ziploc bag.
Add 1 tbsp. of white vinegar.  Throw in a few handfuls of pasta. Shake until all the
liquid is gone.  Pour out on a cookie sheet lined with wax paper to dry. The vinegar
smell will lessen in time, even if it’s strong initially in a day or two it will be all but gone.
Make multiple colors.  Pour dry dyed pasta into a bin with scoops for little ones to explore.
