What A Melon!
Arrange three large bowls in your science
center, each with one of the following supplies: watermelon
seeds, watermelon rinds, and watermelon fruit. Also have three
smaller bowls with a small sample from
each of the larger bowls. Cover each large bowl with a cloth.
Invite a parent volunteer to help with the
center. When a child comes to this center, have the volunteer hold
the cloth while the child slips her
hand into each bowl without looking. How does it feel? What part of
the watermelon is she touching?
Next, encourage each child to examine the contents of the smaller bowls
with a magnifying lens.
Seed Fun
Save all the seeds you can (The kids love to
spit them into a bowl) I wash them in the sink and
then add them to the water table with a little bit of soap for the kids to
wash. Great slippery fun!
Dry them out on a towel and use them in a variety of projects.
Watermelon Planting
Bring small Dixie cups, potting soil, and
spoons to the circle.
Talk again about how a watermelon gets its start and the things a farmer
must do to grow a big
healthy watermelon. Move outdoors and let the children plant a watermelon
seed to take home.

Watermelon Slices
Slice a watermelon several ways to see if it makes a difference
(like an apple) and if slicing it differently gives you more seeds.
