Visit a Watermelon Patch

If possible,  visit a watermelon patch and pick a melon to bring back for snack.

Wooden Watermelons

I have wooden fruits and vegetables with Velcro on them.  Watermelons are one of the fruits.
If you are handy with jigsaws (or your husband) these would be simple to make.
The knives are also made of wood.  Letting them cut this can teach them fractions, servings, etc.

Selection Tips of a Good Watermelon

It's always hard to pick out the best watermelon... try these tips:

Appearance:
Look it over. Choose a symmetrical watermelon that is free of bruises, cuts, and dents.

Weight:
Lift it up, the watermelon should be heavy for its size.

Ripeness:
Turn it over-the underside of a ripe watermelon is a pale or creamy yellow from
where it sat on the ground and ripened in the sun.. The rind has a healthy sheen.
