Watermelon Hop Scotch
Draw watermelon halves or
slices on sidewalk. Put a different amount of seeds in each one.
Either have the children hop from one to another as in hopscotch or call
out a number and
have the children hop across all the slices until they land on the slice
with that many seeds.
Guess What?
Hide a watermelon in a box.
On the outside write clues describing the watermelon.
During circle time show the box and read the clues. Invite volunteers to
guess.
After all guesses are in, unveil the melon. For older students -
list other descriptive words or phrases for watermelon
Watermelon Number Game
Precut some watermelon
shapes (cut circles out of green and red construction paper -
with the green ones being slightly larger than the red; cut in half, glue
red to green and
you've got your watermelons)... on half of the watermelons draw a certain
number of seeds
on the other half write a number and have the child count the seeds to
match the number or you
can just write numbers on them and then save some real watermelon seeds to
have the child
place on the watermelon to match the number.
Watermelon Alphabet Game
Make a green long vine
garden. Make 26 Watermelons. Laminate the green
long vine on the floor with clear contact paper, but before contacting it
put on
the vines big capital letters. Just letters in different positions of the
vine and
contact it down. The letters have to be big. On the watermelons have the
lowercases and make 26 of them and have them laminated for sturdiness and
durability.
Give the kids a mixed up number of watermelons and have them match them to
the floor.
I did this a few years ago. Great game.
Watermelon Seed Transfer Game
Make copies of a large watermelon pattern with different numbers of seeds.
Color, cut out, and laminate each pattern. Give the children tweezers and
real
watermelon seeds. Invite them to use the tweezers to transfer seeds from a
dish to
a watermelon, creating a one to one match with the seeds drawn on the
watermelon .
Have a seed-spitting contest outdoors.
Enormous Watermelon
Play the "enormous watermelon" game.
Use an old 6" square cube that holds pictures. Place a picture to
represent
some of the children's favorite nursery rhymes. On one side place a
picture
of an enormous watermelon. Sit in chairs and roll the dice. Sing
whatever
nursery rhyme appears on top. Most nursery rhymes can be sung to "99
Bottles of Beer" If the watermelon appears everyone yells, "The Enormous
Watermelon!" and everyone scrambles to find a new chair.
