A Slice Of Summer
You will need red, green, and white
construction, scissors, glue, and markers.
Cut each paper into a circle and then cut it in half. Start with green
paper and then
put the white piece over it leaving just some of the green showing. This
will be the
watermelon rind. Add the red layer over the white again with just some of
the white
showing. Trim all the pieces to the size of the green piece. Use the
markers to draw
seeds onto the red piece. You will have what looks like a watermelon
slice.
Laminate or cover with clear contact paper for a wall or bulletin board
display.
Opposites
Draw and
decorate a large watermelon and laminate. Hang on the wall at children's
eye level.
Next draw watermelon slice or a halved watermelon. Laminate and hang
near the other
whole watermelon picture. Bring out a real watermelon and let the
children try to pick it up,
feel it thump it etc. Talk about words to describe it. Write their
"Watermelon Words"
on slips of paper or index cards and hang them around the whole watermelon
picture.
(Cold, dry, wet- if it has condensation, green, smooth, sounds like a
drum etc).
Next slice the watermelon open and talk about all they see. Again write
their
descriptive words and post them. Point out any opposites. Let them lift
a slice
and ask if it is light or heavy, etc. While they are eating the
watermelon ask them
what words they would describe it now. I leave this display up
all week and the kids love to have all the words reread to them.
Photos of Your Children Eating
Watermelon
Take their pictures in small groups or
individually holding and eating the watermelon and put those on
your bulletin board. Use a red and white checkered table cloth as your
background and go from there!
Anyway you slice it (
Grade) is a real treat OR is great!
Have your kids make a watermelon slice using a
half of a paper plate with their names.
Slice a watermelon several ways to see if it makes a difference (like an
apple)
and if slicing it differently gives you more seeds. Take pics and add to
your bulletin board.
