Fourth of July Parade

(Outside activity)

Have children decorate outside riding toys with pre-cut streamers and stars in red/white/blue
(I suppose this could also be done with Canada Day with using just the colors: red/white-but I am
not at all familiar with the holiday though).  Have the children dress up in already made hats/decorations.
Have a parade up & down the street or around in the play-yard.  (simple but fun!)

Bean Bag Toss

I painted a box blue and affixed white stars and red stripes on it.
They will use this as part of their "special" center for bean bag tossing.

Fourth of July Parade

Talk about parades with your children.  If possible, show them pictures of parades.
Invite them to tell you about parades they have seen.  Plan a special Fourth of July
parade with your children.  Give each child an instrument and create a "parade route"
through your room. (You could mark the route ahead of time with masking tape.)

VARIATION: Play music that is often associated with the Fourth of July, such as the 1812 Overture
or Stars and Stripes Forever.  Let your children clap their hands while they march around the room.

Marching Mania

Marching is essential for a good parade and its a great large motor workout, too.  Teach your children the chant below and show them how to high step all around your classroom.  After a few repetitions of the chant, turn on some great marching music, such as a selection from John Philip Sousa or the song "76 Trombones" from the musical The Music Man.  Invite the children to march around to the music.  And be sure to keep your music selection handy because you may wish to use it during your real parade.

One, two, three, four -
Stomp your feet upon the floor!
Five, six, seven, eight -
Knees up high; that's really great!
