Birthday Party Games

Have the class set up a birthday party for America.
Talk about what games children play at their own birthday parties
and play some of those games. If possible play "Stars and Stripes Forever"
and encourage children to play imaginary instruments along with the music.

Flag Matching

You will need small pictures of state flags-you may be able to find these on the internet or in a research
book, need two copies on cardstock of each flag you are going to use. (only use a few matches for
younger kids and more for older kids), cut them out and laminate. Lay the flags upside down
and have the children find the matching flags. Let your children take turns playing flag concentration.

Capture the Flag

Once your children are familiar with the American flag, put their observation skills to the test with this
game.  Before the children arrive for the day, hide a supply of flag cupcake decorations around the room.
Show the children one of the flags, then set them on the hunt.  When all the flags have been found,
gather your group together and count how many each child found.  Conclude the
activity by serving each child a cup of punch and a cupcake - with a flag in it!

Remember the Red, White, and Blue

Play this group game and little ones will quickly learn the elements of the American flag.  To prepare,
make an American flag from red and white construction paper strips, white cutout stars, and a blue
construction paper rectangle.  Place a strip of magnetic tape on the back of each flag piece; then
assemble the flag on a magnetic board.  Show the children the flag and identify the different parts.  Next,
turn the board away from the childrens view and remove one of the pcs.  Show the board to the children
again and have them identify the missing piece.  Replace the missing piece and then repeat the activity.
