Pirate Game Ideas

Sink the Ship

Play the "Sink the Ship" game!  Divide the class into two teams.  Have each team decorate a
box for their ship.  Set a timer and have the children toss ping pong balls into the other
teams ship.  When time is up, count the balls.  The ship with the most balls is sunk!

Pin the Flag on the Treasure Map"

(Photos submitted by Shell)

Using a pirate map... Encourage the children to place the flag cutout on the X
while being blindfolded.  We used two pirate patches instead of an actual blindfold.

Pin the Patch on the Pirate
Pin the X on the Treasure Map"

Materials Needed:
poster board,
construction paper,
double-sided tape,
blindfold

Directions:
On a sheet of butcher paper or poster board draw a pirate face or a treasure map
Cut out  several patches (depending on number of children) or large x's out of construction
paper and allow them to try to put the patch or "x"  in the right place while blindfolded.

Treasure Game

Cut circles from cardboard. Wrap each circle in aluminum foil to represent coins.
To Play - Hide the coins around the classroom. To begin the game, announce that
another group of Pirates snuck onto the ship and has stolen all of our treasure.
We must all look for and rescue our treasure.

Treasure Hunt

First have the kids make pirate treasure chests. The easiest way is with a small paper lunch bag.
They glued on a pirate chest picture they had colored.  Then have a treasure hunt.
We looked for gold (pennies cleaned with salt and vinegar) silver (the lids to orange juice)
and precious jewels (garage sale and  dollar store jewelry).
Our treasure was hidden in bins of various texture materials.

~or~

Draw a treasure map.    Have the children go on a treasure hunt.
(Start by giving them the first clue which might show a refrigerator...they would go to
the refrigerator where they would find the 2nd clue,  a picture of a certain book...inside that book
would be yet another clue.  Continue until the final clue brings you to the hidden treasure chest.)

Treasure Map Game

Have the kids draw a MAP to a treasure.  X marks the spot.  When napping put
a taped x somewhere in the house or yard.  Hide a treasure near for the kids to find.
Ideas for treasures: snack or jewels or bubbles.  Have fun thinking of neat ideas for a treasure.

Scavenger Hunt

Hold a scavenger hunt in your classroom. Hunt for rock candy and pretend they are diamonds.

Swashbuckling Bread Sticks

We can have a sword fight with bread sticks the object is to break down your opponent's
bread stick, without damaging their own, or as little as possible. When one player's
bread stick becomes so short that he or she can no longer use it, the player
surrenders the stub and is forced to "walk the plank"

Pirates Matching Game

Have 10 large different colored treasure chests and number
from 1-10 make several gold coins from shiny gold paper

Turn all of the treasure chests over. Have one child turn one over and count the number
of coins that should be in that particular chest as indicated by the number on it.

Pirate Scavenger Hunt.

We hide the items in the area beforehand then the kids are given a list of what to find.
1 skull & cross bones (I make them out of white fun foam)
1 Jolly Roger Flag
4 golden doubloons (chocolate gold covered coins)
1 bottle of rum (I use those little liqueur chocolate bottles)
3 jewels ( I use different colored beads, red for rubies, green for emeralds and so on)
1 gold earring
2 parrot feathers
1 eye patch
1 treasure map
1 shell from Oak Island

More treasure items you can use:
chocolate coins, candy necklaces, ring pops, and hard candy that resembled precious stones.

Give the kids an allotted time to find as many items on the list.

Walk the Plank

Where you take a plank and see if the kids can walk all
the way across blindfolded without falling in the "alligator pit."

Musical Islands

Play "musical islands" similar to musical chairs but with pillows on the floor instead of chairs.

Sink the Ship

Two large boxes painted to resemble pirate ships, the children form two teams and use
ping pong balls as cannon balls to sink the other ship. Whichever team tosses the most
balls into the box ship wins. You can  vary this game to meet your setting.

Hook the Treasure

Prepare ahead of time: brightly colored plastic drink cups (16 oz or large enough to fit a kid's
hand into. Cut an X hole in the bottom and push a wrapped candy cane halfway down into it.
Voila! A pirate prosthesis! Now empty a large bag of pretzels into a bowl.
See how many pretzels the kids can fish out with their "hooks" in 60 seconds.

Feed the Alligator

A bean bag toss- we made & painted a large alligator mouth.
Children tried tossing  the bean bags into the alligators mouth.

Pin the Flag on the Pirate Ship

Each group rotated through this in the traditional way that pin the tail on the donkey is played.
The exception was that the flag was to be placed in the right position above the mast.

Find the Treasure Game

Let a child (Pirate) hide a treasure (gold spray painted rock) in the classroom.
One pre-selected child (seeker) hides his eyes while this is going on. The pirate
and his mates then direct the seeker to the treasure by clapping
quickly when he gets close and slowly when he is far away.

Pass the Pirate Hat

Play this game similar to Hot Potato but instead use a Pirates Hat.

Find the Coins

(Photo submitted by Donna M.)

I purchased pirate coins at a local craft store.  We used these for crafts, but also had
a coin hunt, similar to an Easter egg hunt.  The kids had a blast with this simple game.
