Farm Songs, Poems, & Fingerplays

The Animals On the Farm

(Sung to the tune of: "Wheels on the bus")

The cow in barn goes moo, moo, moo,
Moo, moo, moo. Moo, moo, moo,
repeat
All around the farm.
The pig in the pen goes oink, oink, oink,...........
The hens in the coop go cluck..........
The lambs on the hill go baa,........
The ducks on the pond go quack......

The Farmer

First the farmer sows his seeds,
(Pretend to sow seeds.)
Then he stands and takes his ease.
He stomps his foot,
(Stomp foot.)
And claps his hands,
(Clap hands.)
And turns around to view his lands.
(Put hand over eyebrows and look to left and right.)

Five Little Farmers

Five little farmers woke up in the sun,
(Hold up five fingers.)
For it was early morning and chores must be done.
The first little farmer went to milk the cow.
(Hold up thumb.)
The second little farmer thought he'd better plow.
(Hold up first finger.)
The third little farmer fed the hungry hen.
(Hold up next finger.)
The fourth little farmer mended broken pens.
 (Hold up last finger.)
Baskets filled with cabbages, and sweet potatoes brown.
When the work was finished and the western sky was red,
Five little farmers tumbled into bed!
(Hold up 5 fingers.)

Farmer In The Dell

The Farmer in the dell, The farmer in the dell,
Hi-ho and merry-o, The farmer in the dell.
The farmer takes a wife.  The farmer takes a wife.
Hi-ho and merry-o, The farmer takes a wife.
The wife takes the child...  The child takes the nurse...
The nurse takes the dog...  The dog takes the cat...
The cat takes the rat...  The rat takes the cat...
The cat takes the rat...  The rat takes the cheese...
The cheese stands alone.  The cheese stands alone.
Hi-ho and merry-o, The cheese stands alone.

10 Little Pigs

(Sung to the tune of: "Five Little Ducks Went Out To Play")

Ten little pigs rolled in the mud -
Squishy, squashy, felt so good.
The farmer took one piggy out.
"Oink, Oink, oink," the pig did shout!

Continue with nine, eight, seven so forth, then...

No little pigs rolled in the mud.
They all looked so clean and good.
The farmer turned his back and then,
Those pigs rolled in the mud again.

Five Little Piggies

Five little piggies standing in a row.
Five little piggies have curly tails to show.
Five little piggies have snouts for noses.
Five little piggies stand on their "toeses."
Five little piggies jump up and down.
Five little piggies turn round and round.
Five little piggies wink and blink their eyes.
Five little piggies all wave goodbye.

P-I-G-G-Y

(Sung to the tune of:  "B-I-N-G-O")

There was a hungry little hog,
And Piggy was his name-o.
P-I-G-G-Y, P-I-G-G-Y, P-I-G-G-Y,
And Piggy was his name-o!

This Little Cow

(hold up one hand, fingers erect, bend down one finger)
This little cow eats hay.
(bend down another finger)
This little cow drinks water.
(bend down another finger)
And this little cow does nothing.
(Bend down another finger)
But lie and sleep all day.

Bingo

There was a farmer had a dog
And Bingo was his Name-o
B-I-N-G-O, B-I-N-G-O, B-I-N-G-0
and Bingo was his Name-o.

(Continue to sing and drop off a letter each time)

This Is the Way We... On the Farm

This is the way we milk the cow (milking motion),
milk the cow, milk the cow,
This is the way we milk the cow,
So early on the Farm.

(Continue adding verses: feed the chickens, drive the tractor, shear the sheep, stack the hay, etc;)

Old MacDonald

Old MacDonald had a farm, E-I-E-I-O.
And on his farm he had a cow. E-I-E-I-O.
With a moo-moo here and a moo-moo there.
Here a moo, there a moo, everywhere a moo-moo.
Old MacDonald had a farm. E-I-E-I-O.
Continue the song including a pig, horse, chicken, duck, etc.

After children are familiar with the song, try introducing farm animals or crops.
In front of the circle, bring out a plastic animal or vegetable. Ask the children what
this is, then sing the song, substituting in the name of the animal/crop. Give the
animal/crop to a child. Continue until each child is holding an animal/crop.
Encourage each child to tell you the name and then place back in the bin.

Open up the Barn Door

Use a construction paper or felt barn.  As you recite the poem, insert a
child's name and let the child supply what the animals says.
Open and close the flap (barn door) after each rhyme
and point to the appropriate animal or make a book.

Open up the barn door, _______
before the clock strikes two;
There's a cow inside the barn,
And he is saying (Moo)

Open up the barn door, ______
it's a sunny day
There's a horse inside the barn
and she is saying (Neigh)

Open up the barn door,________
singing tra-la-la;
There's a lamb inside the barn
And she is saying (BAAAAA)

Open up the barn door, _______
as fast as you know how
There's a cat inside the barn
  And she is saying (Meow)

Open up the barn door _______
 and take a little peek;
There's a mouse inside the barn
  and he is saying (Squeak)

 Open up the barn door,_______
  And don't get off the track;
There's a duck inside the barn,
 and he is saying (QUACK)

Chickens

One, two, three little chickens.
(Count three fingers.)
Dear little downy things,
Cuddling away from every danger
(Nestle one hand under other arm.)
Under their mother's wings.
Peep, peep, when the baby's sleepy,
This is the song she sings.
(Assume a relaxing position.)
Sleep, sleep, sleep, little chicks,
Little chicks sleep in the night.

Five Little Ducks

Five little ducks went in for a swim.
(Hold up hand, extend fingers.)
The first little duck put his head in.
(Point to each finger in turn.)
The second little duck put his head back.
The third little duck said, "Quack, quack, quack."
The fourth little duck with his tiny brother
Went for a walk with his father and mother.
("Walk" fingers up opposite arm.)

Ten Little Ducklings

Ten little ducklings,
(Move hands back and forth in waddling motion.)
Dash, dash, dash!
Jumped in the duck pond,
(Motion of jumping.)
Splash, splash, splash!
When the mother called them,
"Quack, quack, quack!"
Ten little ducklings
Swam right back.
(Motion of swimming.)

Five Spotted Cows

Five spotted cows standing in line.
The first one said, "I'm feeling fine!"
(Point to self)
The second one said, "How do you do?"
(Turn to third cow and hold our right hand.)
The third one said, "Moo! Moo! Moo!"
(Take second cow's hand and shake it.)
The fourth one said, "I'm grazing in the grass."
(Make chewing motion.)
The fifth one said, "I'm full at last!"
(Pat tummy.)
So the cows stood together and said,
"We're through! Let's take a bow and all say, "MOO!"

Milk the Cow

Milk, milk, milk the cow
While sitting on a stool
Pulling, squirting, pulling squirting
Till the buckets full.

Five Cows All Black and White

(Sung to the tune of: "Five Little Speckled Frogs")

Five cows all black and white
Chewed their cud from day to night
So they could give milk sweet and pure.
Squirt! Squirt!
One left the barn one day
So she could find more hay
Then there were 4 cows all black and white.
Moo! Moo!

Moo, Moo Brown Cow

(Sung to the tune of:  "Baa-baa Black Sheep")

Moo Moo Brown cow,
Have you milk for me?
Yes sir! Yes sir!
As tasty as can be!
Churn it into butter.
Make it into cheese.
Freeze it into ice-cream,
Or drink it if you please!
Moo Moo Brown cow,
Have you milk for me?
Yes sir! Yes sir!
As tasty as can be!

The Cow

The cow is big
The cow says "moo"
The cow makes milk
For me and you.

Cows In The Kitchen

Once you introduce this knee slappin' story "Cows In The Kitchen" by June Crebbin, to your class,
they'll want you to read it and sing it over and over again.  Encourage your class to join in singing
the repetitive text.  After many rounds of singing and a lot of looking at the hilarious pictures,
adapt the pattern of the text to create a new story, this time about the kids in your classroom.
For example, you might sing the following:

(Sung to the tune of: "Skip To My Lou")

Kids in the classroom, what do they do?
Kids in the classroom, what do they do?
Kids in the classroom, what do they do?
What do they do in the classroom?

(John's) in the kitchen, cook, cook, cook
(John's) in the kitchen, cook, cook, cook
(John's) in the kitchen, cook, cook, cook
That's what (he/she) does in the classroom!

Kids at circle time, sing, sing, sing....

Cow Poem

Cow loves to moo and chew it's true!
Moo--moo--moo!
Cow flaps her tail and fills a pail
Of her fresh milk for you.
Cow wears a bell so you can tell
When she's on the roam
And at day's end she joins her friends
And cow comes strolling home!

This Is The Way We Milk The Cows

(Sung to the tune of: "Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush")

This is the way we milk the cows, milk the cows, milk the cows
This is the way we milk the cows so early in the morning.

This is the way we gather the eggs, gather the eggs, gather the eggs
This is the way we gather the eggs so early in the morning.

This is the way we feed the pigs, feed the pigs, feed the pigs
This is the way we feed the pigs so early in the morning.

This is the way we ride a horse, ride a horse, ride a horse
This is the way we ride a horse so early in the morning.

The Purple Cow Poem

I never saw a Purple Cow,
I never hope to see one;
But I can tell you, anyhow,
I'd rather see than be one.

All around the farm.

The hens in the coop go cluck, cluck, cluck.
Cluck, cluck, cluck.  Cluck, cluck, cluck.
The hens in the coop go cluck, cluck, cluck
All around the farm.

The rooster on the fence goes cock-a-doodle doo,
Cock-a-doodle doo, cock-a-doodle doo.

Five Little Ducks
(Traditional)

Five little ducks went out to play.
Over the pond and far away.
Mother duck called with a quack, quack, quack.
Four little ducks came back, came back.

Four little ducks.......
Three little ducks.......
Two little ducks.......
One little duck.......
No little ducks went out to play.

Five Little Ducks
(Traditional)

Five little ducks went out to play,
Over the hills and far away.
Mother duck said,
"Quack, quack, quack, quack,"
Four little ducks came waddling back.

(REPEAT 3, 2, 1)

From over the hills and far away,
Father duck said,
"Quack, quack, quack, quack,"
All the little ducks came waddling back.

Three Little Ducks That I Once Knew
(Traditional)

Three little ducks that I once knew.
A fat one, a skinny one, a yellow one, too.
But the one little duck with a feather on his back
He ruled the others with his quack, quack, quack!

Down to the meadow they would go.
Wibble-wobble, wibble-wobble to and fro.
But the one little duck with the feathers on his back.
He ruled the others with a quack, quack, quack.
He ruled the others with a quack, quack, quack.

Little Duck

I am a little duck that goes quack, quack, quack.
(Make hand be duck's mouth and it quacks)
And I've got lots of feathers on my back, back, back.
(Wave hands near bottom to indicate tail feathers)
And when I go down to the lake, I wiggle and I wobble and I shake, shake, shake.
(Wobble and shake like a duck)
And when I go to sleep at night,
I close my eyes very tight.
But in the morning when I wake,
I wiggle and I wobble and I shake, shake, shake.

I'm a Duck, I'm a Duck

(Sung to the tune of: "Frere Jacques")

I'm a duck, I'm a duck,
Watch me waddle, watch me waddle.
Hear me when I talk,
Hear me when I talk.
Quack, quack, quack; quack, quack, quack.

Farm Sounds

The hens in the coop go cluck..........
The lambs on the hill go baa,........
The ducks on the pond go quack
All Around the Barnyard

All around the barnyard
The animals are fast asleep.
Sleeping cows and horses,
Sleeping pigs and sheep.

Here comes the cocky rooster
To sound his daily alarm.
"Cock-a-doodle-doo!
Wake up sleepy farm!"
