              Farm Dramatic Play Ideas

              Dress Up

              Place flannel shirts, overalls, hoe,
straw hat, animal costumes, boots, etc; in the
 center for the
children to dress up with. You may choose to incorporate pictures
              that
show the children examples of the result of dressing like a
              farmer, like a cow, etc;

              Re-enactment

Map off an area, if you would like,
for a pretend class farm. This may be inside or outside,
 depending
on the need and availability. Recreate a garden area, complete
with garden tools, seed packets with markers, and seeds to plant.

              Farm Animal Puppets

Place Farm animal puppets, handmade animal hats,
and other props in your dramatic play center.

              Animal Chit Chat

Using animal patterns, make a stick puppet for each animal.
Hold two animals, such as a horse and cow, far apart.
Start "walking" them towards each other.  When they meet, have
              them stop and "talk."
               For example:

COW:      "Hi, friend Horse.  How are you today?"
HORSE:  "I'm fine, friend cow.  Where are you going?"
COW:     "I'm going to the barn.  It's time for my milking."
HORSE:  "I'm going over to the corral to give my friend Raymond a
              ride."
              COW:     "Bye, Horse."
              HORSE:  "Bye!"
              Let
two children each pick an animal, walk towards each other,
and then begin a conversation.  When they're done, have them say
              "Good-bye"
and walk away.  All of the other children clap.  Continue with
              more animal chit-chat.

              Bessie the Cow
              Take
a saw horse, wrap numerous layers  of old newspaper around the
              middle and then
a brown blanket. Add a yarn tail, paint some spots on saw horse
              legs, add cow a face,
made from a shoebox, rubber glove for utters.
The children can milk it, ride it, comb its tail, etc.
